There are basically two sides to this chemical castration issue. On one side we have people who think that such a procedure violates the person's human rights and on the other hand, we have those who think that sexual molestation should be punished with something much more effective than by imprisoning them . This opinion is based on the fact that some child molesters are released back into society after serving as little as one forth of their prison sentence. Recidivism is very common among these child molesters. 75% of these molesters are convicted more than once. It is argued that imprisoning these criminals only serves as a band-aid solution for this horrific issue, hence people think that other solutions must be introduced.
Apart from this, we have scientists who argue that chemical castration is effective and others who think that it is not. Those who think that chemical castration is effective have reached such a conclusion after finding the link between testosterone, aggression and molestation. It's their opinion that giving depo provera to these men acts on the brain to inhibit hormones that stimulate the testicles to produce testosterone, which is the major cause of this behavior. However, there are other scientists who believe in the insufficiency of this treatment. They have concluded that forced castration has an adverse effect of angering a criminal, hence increasing his violent tendencies which may lead to additional sexual abuse. In addition, depo-provera is completely reversible, meaning that unless injections are mandatory, monitored and treatment continues, these aggressors will not be cured by this therapy. It is stipulated that the aggressor will have renewed sexual fantasies and high levels of testosterone, leading them to "act" again.
